Workshop 1: Narrative data visualisation

This is a practical hands-on session, focusing on how to use a range of modern Cloud-based tools to tell stories with your data and craft engaging visualisations. We will explore a process for articulating the importance of context; how to choose effective visuals; focusing your audience’s attention; and how to think like a designer.

We will do this by exploring real life examples from academia and business, applying graphic design and storytelling principles to enable your audiences to see beyond the data, and to the meaning of the data.
We’ll also touch on the frameworks that can be used to build your own tools, and the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches.

Participants will learn to:

  • Understand the landscape of data visualisation tools available today, and their different strengths and weaknesses
  • Understand and have practiced the principles of effective storytelling with data, and how the process used by experienced designers can assist with your research
  • Have signed up for a free trial accounts with one or more tools, and explored their effectiveness in a mutually supportive environment
