Sam Cottrell

PhD student, Royal College of Art

Sam Cottrell is a 3rd year PhD candidate in the department of Innovation Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art.

Prior to his current research, Sam was awarded an MSci in Geoscience from Royal Holloway, University of London. Upon graduation in 2009 he gained employment within the Oil and Gas exploration services industry. As a Product Manager, he guided development of a suite of industry specific catalogue and data management software, used to capture and make sense of large volumes of subsurface data.

Sam’s research aims to understand the types of uncertainty present in historical data, and present guidelines and suggestions on how capture, model and visually represent them in order to expose additional knowledge that may have gone unrecognised.

He undertakes his research as part of an AHRC Collaborative Partnership between the Royal College of Art and The National Archives.
